cafeteria stories - what's for lunch?

I mentioned earlier that I've been spending one day a week up at a middle school doing some class voice lessons and assisting the choir teacher.  It happens to be the same middle school I attended, so memories flood my mind as I walk those halls.  The last time I was there, I passed the cafeteria and thought ... It's a wonder I didn't weigh 500 lbs. by the time I graduated high school.

Lunch was never a healthy meal for me, unless I happened to bring my lunch to school.  Here are some of my favorite lunch combinations from middle school and high school:

1.  pizza and french fries (Be careful when carrying this paper plate ... it eventually becomes limp with grease.)
2.  french fries and chocolate chip cookies
3.  pickle and chocolate chip cookies (Yeah, I'm talking about the big ole honkin' pickle like you can get at the movies.)
4.  pizza pocket and chocolate chip cookies
5.  'machine lunch' (In other words, our lunch consisted of things bought out of the vending machines.  My friend and I came up with this name in middle school and thought we were soo clever.)

I'm beginning to see where my need for dessert after every meal was developed.  Those dang cookies.  They were so good.

In high school, we had the yummy sandwiches from Mazzios, Subway sandwiches, or Chick-fil-a sandwiches on different days of the week.  However, if you weren't totally rude and one of the cool kids that was allowed to cut, even with the assistant principals watching, then you didn't have a chance.

It's just funny to think about how that was the norm and I never felt sick from eating like that for 7 straight years.  If I ate that much grease/sugar every day right now, I'd have slumber-party sickness all the time!

  1. I ate a bag of Doritos, two (TWO!) Hershey bars, and a Jungle Juice almost every day of junior high. Disgusting.
