letters to duke - 5 months

March 22, 2012

Dear Duke,

You have earned a new nickname this month.  We lovingly call you our little dinosaur.  You happily squeak and squeal all day long.  It is so funny to watch and listen to!  You have also discovered that you can make noise with your mouth closed.  You'll lay on your playmat just humming away ... as you are rolling over both ways like a pro!

You weren't gaining weight very well so we had to go to the doctor.  At 4 months, you weighed 12 lbs. 11 oz. and at your weight check (on March 16th), you weighed 13 lbs. 9 oz.  So in 3 weeks, you almost gained a pound!  I was thrilled and relieved!

You still are eating 6 times a day for about 15-20 minutes.  During your feedings you are pretty distracted, as you are so aware of your surroundings.  It doesn't bother me though.  Sometimes you'll just stop, look up at me, smile, and then continue eating.  It's pretty sweet. :)  Two feedings each day are supplemented with rice cereal.  You have really learned to love that stuff!  You reach out for our food while we're eating and you've definitely become interested in trying it.  We get to start baby food now so we'll see how that goes!

You suck on your bottom lip a lot, which makes for a really funny facial expression.  You also love sucking on your toes.  Sure makes changing your diaper a little tricky!  You have continued to be such a smiley baby.  You will smile at anyone or anything!  Laughing is also something that you do daily.  Hearing you laugh is absolutely wonderful.  Something funny you like to do is arch your back, while on the floor, and look at things upside down.  You're just so squirmy!

You sleep 9-10 hours at night, depending on when we put you down.  Your waketime is pretty much an hour and a half.  Your first 2 naps are 1.5 hours, your 3rd nap is usually 1-1.5 hours, and whether or not you have a 4th nap depends on how fussy you are.

Getting out and about with you is so much easier these days.  Outings consist of visits to homes of family/friends, quick trips to the grocery store, Cuppies and Joe, Kaiser's, church, the bank, and the music store.  You're a pretty great little partner to have around during the day.

I just can't get enough of you.  I can't stop kissing your cheeks, snuggling your little body, or squeezing your precious hands and feet.  This past month has been so much fun.  Next on the agenda is sitting up.  I can't imagine seeing you sit up by yourself, but I suppose the day will come!  I love you, sweet boy.
