letters to duke - 12 months

October 22, 2012

Dear Duke,

One year?  I have a one year old?  This is hard to believe, Duke.

You are a crazy little man and full of personality.  You have started to imitate me saying "yum" at the table when you take a bite.  After I take a drink of my drink, I open my mouth and let out an "ahh."  You do the same.  Watching you copy us is so fun!

You know exactly what "no" means and these days, it makes you pretty mad when we say it.  Your natural response is to bite somebody or something, so we're working on that.  You also know exactly what "Do you want to take a bath?" means.  When I say it, you quickly start crawling to the bathroom and almost can't contain your excitement.

You are still doing your funny little crawl.  In the past couple of weeks, you started taking a couple steps occasionally.  But on your actual birthday yesterday, you took 5 steps!  You were standing up in the kitchen and just totally went for it.

Today, you weighed in at 21 lbs. (23rd percentile) and you are 31.5 inches long (92nd percentile).  You're still eating 5 times a day, 3 of which are supplemented with food.  I have officially stopped nursing you and we are making the transition to drinking cold whole milk out of a sippy cup.

Your doctor said it's okay if your appetite is changing these days.  I was relieved to hear that!  Some days you eat every meal very well and some days you are just not in the mood.  It's nice to know that it's normal.

Every day, you hit a fussy period somewhere between 4:00-6:00.  We're not quite sure of the cause - could be that we're doing a lot of adjustments with your food right now so your "snack" time is looking different, could be because there's a lot going on with dad coming home and piano lessons starting, or it could be because you're just a baby.  Who knows!  What we do know is that taking walks in the stroller or letting you play outside is always a good fix.  Those are some calming activities for you and, really, you would be outside all day if it were up to you.

You're sleeping 11.5-12 hours at night and taking 2 naps during the day.  Lately, your naps have been on the shorter side - 1.5 hours usually and 2 hours if we're lucky.  I think you may be getting ready to transition to a shorter morning nap and longer afternoon nap.

You love to pull up to the piano and place your little fingers on the keys.  You especially love to do this when I'm teaching lessons.  But you're so cute that my students don't mind having a duet partner.

Your hair is really starting to curl up in the back.  It is the cutest thing.  You still have 6 teeth and no signs of any other new ones coming in.  You were sick for the first time ever this month.  It was a little stomach bug and was gone after 2-3 days.

I just want to say thanks, Duke.  Thanks for sticking with me in those first moments of your life.  Thanks for always loving me.  Thanks for giving me the title "mom" and for teaching me how to fill my new role.  Thanks for letting me make mistakes and learn it all with you.  Thanks for a truly wonderful year.

You are so special to me.  The instant I had you, I was flooded with a love I never knew and it's continued to be more than I can even handle sometimes.  When I became your mom, I finally understood how much my parents loved me.  And I finally got a glimpse of how much our God loves us.

Life with you is better than anything I could imagine.  My life is richer because you're in it.

I love you so much, my sweet one year old boy.
