i guess i missed the memo

I'm 25.  And although I spend most of my days in my home wearing sweat pants, eating leftover frozen pizza for lunch, and playing with my baby, I'd like to think I'm pretty in touch with what's going on in the world ... popular phrases, styles, music, etc.  However, there are 3 things lately that have totally stumped me.  Please help.

"That awkward moment when ... "

Where did this come from?  One moment my Facebook news feed was normal and the next, it was covered with sentences fragments beginning with that phrase.  After I noticed the frequent use of it, I realized how not awkward most of the situations were.  Then I'd occasionally see a status that said, "That awkward moment when you realize your awkward moment wasn't awkward at all."  I couldn't have agreed more.  Anyway, I think this phrase is on its way out and I'm glad about it.

Brooms

I'm sure I could google this and figure out the answer, but I thought I'd ask you instead.  Why are there pictures of brooms everywhere I turn?  Also, why is this funny?

Mustaches

It's like I went to bed one night and woke up the next day to mustaches on everything.  I don't have an opinion on this.  I'm pretty apathetic.  But I just wish I knew where it came from.  It seems like parties are full of "mustache art" (I guess that's what you'd call it).  Mustaches on rods for photo booths, mustaches on cups, mustaches on promotional signs for events, mustaches, mustaches, mustaches!  Are mustaches the new owl?  Even if I am told where this fad came from, I still will be confused as to why it was/is a fad.  Of all things, a mustache?  I'm not hating.  I just want to know where this interesting little idea came from.

So, all you hip kids out there, please enlighten me.
