Okay, so the comment about the Spice Girls yesterday gave my brother and mom a good laugh. And then my mom and I had a good laugh about it on the phone.
I got that CD in 5th grade and suddenly, everything turned Spice Girls. Dress up with friends for fun? Spice Girls. Halloween with friends? Spice Girls. (I only wish I had a picture of this. Maybe I do. If I find it, I'll be sure to share it with you no matter how embarassing it may be. Because, well, you probably have a similar picture.) In most instances, I remember being Scary Spice. This is funny because nothing about me is scary and I'm not black. But it's whatever. I had big curly hair and that's just the hand I was dealt.
Anyway, I loved this new girl band phenomenon. Being a "famous singer" was a dream of mine and this seemed like the way to do it - with friends AND you each get to have a cool nickname and dress totally awesome.
But when I began belting phrases like, "Wanna make love to you baby," my dad told my mom he didn't want me listening to them. (I just found out about this yesterday while talking to my mom on the phone.) She defended me, saying I didn't even know what I was singing. But he still wasn't a fan. He ended up putting the CD on top of the fridge, out of sight.
How my 5th grade self missed this is beyond me. I probably just figured I'd lost it and I'd continue on with Hanson's Middle of Nowhere album. (Those 2 CDs plus Natalie Imbruglia's Left of the Middle were my jam.)

But really, my sweet naive mind had no idea what those words meant.
Also, mom and dad, just to reinforce how heavy my conscience was in 5th grade, I never listened to the song "Naked" on that album. You didn't know there was a song called "Naked" on that album? Well, there was. And I never listened to it. Couldn't tell you one thing about it. I had (and probably still have) every word to every other song on that album memorized. So, even though I sang about making love as a 5th grader, at least I never listened to "Naked." You're welcome. :)
I loved Hanson and the Spice Girls.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I confess, saw both Spice Girls movies in the theater. Ahahaha. NO REGRETS.
Also, I listened to Hanson's Middle of Nowhere album about a year or so ago, and realized I still know every word to every song on that album. I don't know whether to be saddened that I knew that in the first place, or happy that I remembered. :D
Yes! I listened to that album about a year ago as well and still remembered all the words! In fact, I just may listen to it right now ... :)

ReplyDeleteI teamed up with 4 other friends from Jr. High show choir to do our best (lip-synced) rendition of "Wannabe" for a school talent show. We practiced for weeks in my backyard. (And I'm sure my dad probably felt the same way!) Oh the memories.... :)
