Eating:  6-8 feedings in 24 hours; every 2.5-3 hours
Number of Naps:  Still taking 4 naps.
Duration of Naps:  Anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours.  Naps did start to improve this month, specifically the 2nd one.  There were a lot of 45 min. - 1 hr. and 10 min. naps, then towards the end of the month, things started getting better.
Length of Waketime:  1st waketime = 55 min, 2nd waketime = absolute mystery; almost every 2nd nap ended up being just 45 minutes, 3rd waketime = 1.5 hours, 4th waketime = 1.5 hours (or however long would make her 4th nap around 45 minutes)
Hours of Sleep at Night:  A couple days before she turned 12 weeks, we decided not to feed her when she woke in the night.  We had every reason to believe she could easily make it through the night without eating.  (She was on formula, didn't spit up a ton, was gaining well, and wasn't eating well for her first feeding of the day due to the MOTN feeding.)  So when she woke in the night, she fussed, and then went back to sleep on her own.  So from 11.5 weeks on, she was doing around 10-11 hours of sleep.

Worth Noting:
-By the end of this month, we started swaddling her hands up by her mouth.
-At 10 weeks, I tried a new thing.  The consistent morning waketime was really rough on us, so I decided that whenever she woke (6:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.), I'd start my day.  My goal was just to keep bedtime the same.  I'm not sure if this helped us get closer to STTN or not, but that did happen soon after.  Once she was STTN, she fell back into a consistent morning waketime.
-In general, it felt like something magical happened when she turned 3 months.  Everything just seemed more settled - her schedule, her night sleep, her naps, her ounces per feeding.

  1. Hi Claire- I really appreciate you detailing your schedules and how they have changed over each month. They are super helpful! My 14 week old is also on an 8am schedule.

    1. When your baby wakes early from a nap, do you feed right away? How do you go about adjusting the rest of the day?
    2. In an older post, you wrote about extending wake time when Sweet Pea didn't go to sleep right away and awoke from naps earlier. When she didn't go to sleep right away, would she just play? Or would she fuss and cry during the time? I'm trying to figure out when to extend my baby's wake time (which is currently 1 hour). It's hard to figure out if she is fussing at nap time because she is overtired, or because I should be extending her wake time

    1. Hey! So glad they're helpful!

      1. I always wait a bit. I give a little bit of time before going in just in case they end up going back to sleep. If crying persists to 10-15 minutes, then I get them and feed. If they take a full feeding, then I know they really woke due to hunger. If they don't, then I know it was some sort of sleep issue. As far as the rest of the day, sometimes this means an extra feeding has to be added in so the day still ends at the right time. I hesitate to push waketime simply because I know they can't handle the extra time. So, if they take good naps, they could possibly end up back on schedule, but sometimes we aren't so lucky. ;) I just say to always stick with EWS and the optimal waketime and if the schedule is a bit wonky, you can always start over the next day! :)

      2. Oh yes! I love that post - it was actually a guest post by a friend and I'm so glad she wrote it all out! (I think that's the one you're referring to??) I can't speak for Elaine (the writer), but in my experience, extending waketime usually comes after mostly playtime in the crib after being put down. However, crying could also be a sign - it really just depends on the baby. Not a great answer, I know! BUT - what I would suggest is just to keep a good log of everything so you can notice your baby's patterns. You can experiment with different waketimes and log how she does with it. It may help you to note what works best for her.

      Hope some of this helps!

  2. Hello! Love your schedules and detail!
I am wondering how many ounces per feeding you were giving?
    Thanks!

    1. Good! I hope it's helpful! I looked back on my notes and it looks like that towards the beginning of the month I was feeding an average of 3 ounces (ranged anywhere from 2.5-3.5 though) and then towards the end it was closer to 4 ounces (ranged anywhere from 3.5-4.5). :)

  3. Hi- I really like reading your monthly schedule summaries. I stumbled upon your blog from the babywise.com blog (Val's blog) and I was excited to find someone else who had to do formula. I was wondering, how did you decide what kind of formula to use for your daughter?

We started with a Similac milk one and just recently switched to one with less lactose (Similac Sensitive)... but it seems like my daughter is still gassy. It's been so long since I've done this. The age gap btwn my 2nd son and my newborn is 4 years! I've forgotten so much. Are babies always THIS gassy?! Haha!

Thanks and again, I've enjoyed reading your blog about formula babies and babywise! It totally makes sense that our little ones take in a different amount each feeding! We were giving our baby the same amount until I read your blog and we upped the amount by an ounce and started to see that she would take more or less at different times during the day. Anyway, thanks!

    1. Hello! So glad you stumbled here!

I actually don't have a very thorough answer to give you about the formula. The main reason I chose the brand I did was because it was the brand I was most familiar with and the brand I had seen some of my friends use. Not an extremely intellectual answer! haha But it's been great and Nova has loved it.

As for the gas?? My answer is YES, newborns are so gassy!! It took me awhile with my first to figure out what to do for that, but with Nova, I started giving her gas drops the second I noticed she was uncomfortable! Have you tried anything like that?

I'm so glad you enjoyed that post and that it was helpful! Really encouraging to know. :) Hope you can figure out a good formula for your newborn!
