the best part of waking up

Grinding those delicious coffee beans and drowning them in hot water - that's the best part of waking up.

(Yeah, I'm a coffee with cream girl.)

But lately, I've been thinking.  I really want the best part of waking up to be sharing that coffee with this guy.

Since Duke has entered the picture, I've started my mornings with him.  Most of the time, I wake up to my alarm telling me that it's time to wake and feed him.  However, a few months ago I read this post by my friend Leslie.  I thought it sounded interesting, so I tried it.  I've definitely jumped on the get-up-before-your-kid(s) train (most days).  I love brushing my teeth, washing my face, making my bed, and taking a few sips of coffee before getting Duke.  It makes me feel like a person.

But lately I've been thinking - what if I got up in time to have a few moments with Colt before he left for work?  Colt says goodbye to me before he leaves every morning and most of the time, it takes everything in me to muster up an, "I love you, bye," before falling back into a deep sleep.

I've always been envious of those people that wake up with their spouse and enjoy breakfast together.  For us, this means we'd need to be sitting down, ready to eat around 6:30 a.m.  This means I would need to get up around 6:15 a.m. to get the coffee and food (cereal, oatmeal, eggs, whatever) ready.  This means I'm tired.

I'm not a morning person (like my husband) but I really want to be.  As a teenager, I thought that was just an adult thing - to be a morning person.  I was wrong though.  I'm married with a kid and still enjoy staying up late much more than getting up early.  But the crispness of the early morning is something I wish I could get up for.  And spending time with Colt before work would probably be really refreshing.  I may have to try it.

Anyway, it's just something I've been thinking about the past few weeks.  What do you guys think?  Do you start your mornings with your spouse?

  1. I've been having these exact thoughts the past few weeks! Greg is always up, dressed and ready for the day by the time the kids get up. I'm groggy eyed and half asleep, fixing breakfast and double checking R's backpack. I WANT to be a morning person!

    1. Surely we can MAKE ourselves become morning people, right?? :)

  2. Um, we really are twins :) Eric and I have been wanting to work on this in our lives as well. Even though we don't have kids, it's still always a rush to get out the door - no conversation, no time in prayer, no exercising - all things that I am convinced would help me get my morning off to a better start. So maybe we'll be taking that step with you soon!

  3. I swear we are twins, Claire :) Eric and I were just talking about trying to become "morning people." Even though we don't have kids, I definitely like we could better use our morning time together. Right now it's just rushing around, hardly talking, etc. I hope we are able to do it!

    1. We'll have to keep each other posted on how it's going. I've already found myself backing down saying, "Well ... maybe if we could just be up together one morning per week." I just love my sleep!
