twenty-nine

Well, because of vacation and one of the craziest summers ever, I have been a little MIA.  I know all of you are just dying to know how my 29th birthday went, so I'll fill you in.

On July 14th, I woke up and had breakfast with just Duke.  Nova decided to sleep until 9:45 that day - happy birthday to me!  About mid-morning, Sara called to inform me that she'd be bringing by some donut holes and an iced caramel latte.  I love having second breakfast.  Soon after that, I was greeted by the men who had come to fix our air conditioner, which had completely gone out the day before.  They fixed it and it wasn't a million dollars.  Again, happy birthday to me!

For lunch, the kids and I drove to my parents' house where my mom had fixed us lunch.  After putting the kids down for their naps there, I went back to my house to get ready for a surprise date planned by Colt - Dust Bowl Lanes followed by Oak & Ore.  We ended the night with presents and homemade french silk pie at my parents' house.

It was a really great birthday.  (Especially compared to my birthday last year which was kind of a flop.)  It was half dreamy day of freedom and good food and half swiping my card to pay for a new air conditioner part and wiping peoples' mouths and bottoms.  A true grown-up birthday.  And you know, there's something really sweet about grown-up birthdays like that.  I guess it's just that things like fancy dates and food I didn't have to prepare feel so good and so great, but my day-to-day life - the people in it, the broken things I have to fix, the diapers that have to be changed - is made of the stuff that really makes life rich.  I had the best of both worlds on my birthday and I'm so grateful for all of it.

So it's my last year in my twenties.  It doesn't totally freak me out.  What does freak me out is this incredibly long 30x30 list I made up a few years ago.  Maybe a little over-ambitious?  We'll see how that goes.

Every year is better than the last, so I have every reason to believe 29 is going to be the best yet.
